Vietnam Travel Guide – Ban Gioc Waterfall

Ban Gioc Waterfall travel guide Waterfall is one of the biggest border waterfalls in the world, and is a must-see for adventurous travellers and trekkers. Located close to the Chinese border, it is surrounded by stunning scenery of rugged limestone pinnacles, bamboo groves and rice fields. It is also one of the best places to experience an off-the-beaten-track Vietnam adventure travel.

Until recently, foreign visitors were required to obtain a permit in order to visit this spectacular place but the authorities now allow you to simply purchase a ticket without any additional documentation. You may still be asked to present your passport at the entrance kiosk though.

To get the best view of the waterfall, head to the top of Truc Lam Phat Tich pagoda (Ban Gioc temple), from where you can see the entire falls and its powerful waters. It is quite a climb but the reward is the magical sight!

The best time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall is from September to October. The amount of rain will usually be lower and therefore the river is less flooded, making it easier to walk around and enjoy the amazing scenery.

You can take a trip to Ban Gioc waterfall and Ba Be lake from Hanoi on some tours such as the Ban Gioc Waterfall & Ba Be Lake Tour run by Mr Linh’s Adventures which has great reviews from travellers. This is a 3 day excursion and can be combined with other destinations such as Nguom Ngao cave and Puong Grotto or taken as part of a more in-depth trip of up to 10 days around Northern Vietnam.
